The course is divided into two modules, each focusing on specific aspects of the standard. Students will get an overview of different ways messages are sent and received, and will participate in hands-on exercises to develop practical skills in message parsing.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the different methods of HL7® version 2 message exchange and how different systems share data.
  • Apply knowledge of the HL7® version 2 standard to participate in hands-on exercises to develop practical skills in message parsing.
  • Analyze message structure, segments, and trigger events to understand the relationships between different components of the HL7® version 2 standard.

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).
