After registering for the training, navigate to My Learning in your MySIIM Account profile to access the content. This course builds upon the “HL7 FHIR® – The Basics” course, expanding on FHIR-related topics such as encoding of resources, REST interfaces/services, bundles, capability statements, the current state of FHIR implementations in the real world, as well as FHIR-related technologies.
Additionally, the course includes hands-on exercises to help students develop practical skills in implementing FHIR®. Students will learn how to work with FHIR® resources, elements, and profiles, and how to implement RESTful FHIR® APIs.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain how FHIR® encodes and exchanges data as resources and bundles, plus how FHIR servers can interoperate via capability statements.
- Develop awareness of the current state of FHIR® implementations in real world settings, e.g. EMRs.
- Apply hands-on knowledge of FHIR® interoperability to implement FHIR® resources, elements, and profiles, and to implement RESTful FHIR® APIs for effective data exchange.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of FHIR® implementation in healthcare settings and suggest improvements where necessary.
- Understand the role of FHIR-related technologies like FHIRcast, SMART on FHIR and CDS Hooks.
Format/Class Structure
This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP).
Who Should Take This Course
This course is ideal for healthcare professionals, software developers, IT personnel, and anyone interested in understanding the FHIR® standard and its implementation in healthcare. Prior knowledge of FHIR (including having taken our FHIR – The Basics training), healthcare data exchange, RESTful web services, and healthcare terminologies is recommended but not required.
