This training is an introduction to the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) standard. This course covers the essentials of FHIR® including its architecture, design principles, various aspects of implementation, maturity model, as well as relationship with V2/V3/CDA. Participants will learn how FHIR® enables the exchange of healthcare information across different systems, devices, and organizations. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Define the key principles and components of the FHIR® standard, including its
  • architecture, design, maturity model, and various aspects of implementation. 
  • Explain how FHIR® enables the exchange of healthcare information across different 
  • systems, devices, and organizations. 
  • Analyze FHIR® use cases and develop FHIR®-based solutions for real-world healthcare
  • scenarios. 
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of FHIR® implementation in healthcare settings and suggest
  • improvements where necessary. 
  • Understand the fundamental differences between FHIR® and previous HL7 standards such as v2, v3 and CDA. 

Format/Class Structure

This is a live, virtual course held on SIIM’s Zoom platform. Participants will engage in instructor-led, interactive learning with hands-on training using SIIM’s Virtual Hospital Program (VHP). 

Who Should Take This Course

This course is ideal for healthcare professionals, software developers, IT personnel, and anyone interested in understanding the FHIR® standard and its implementation in healthcare. Prior knowledge of healthcare data exchange, RESTful web services, and healthcare terminologies is recommended but not required.

CE Credit

The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine has approved this activity for 2 hours of SIIM IIP Credits towards certification and re-certification by the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII).

To receive credit for the activity, registrants must complete the course modules and survey.
